    In the language of the Internet, a "cookie" is a small amount of data sent back and forth between a Web site and a browser, usually to keep track of the state of an interaction between an application and you, the user. The LAO LAW Web site uses a cookie for this purpose and cannot work unless your browser is configured to accept the cookie. (The cookie the LAO LAW site uses is temporary, a "session" cookie, and is "First Party, only sent to the server which originated it.)

    To configure Internet Explorer 8 and 9 to accept the LAO LAW Web site's cookies:

    1. At the top-right of the browser window, click on the "Gear" icon
       
    2. In the list which appears, click "Internet Options"

    3. In the Internet Options dialogue box, click the "Privacy" tab

    4. You have 2 options, depending on how much you want to restrict cookies:

      If you want to accept cookies for all sites:


      (a) Set the slider to "Medium"
      (b) This should be enough to enable all cookies, but it is recommended to add the site to the "Sites" list. To do this, click "Sites"
      (c) In the "Address of the web site:" paste the URL of the LAO LAW site: http://www.research.legalaid.on.ca
      (d) Click "Allow"
      (e) Click "OK"
      (f) Click "OK"

      If you only want to allow cookies from the LAO LAW Web site:


      (a) Set the slider to "High"
      (b) Click "Sites"
      (c) In the "Address of the web site:" paste the URL of the LAO LAW site: http://www.research.legalaid.on.ca
      (d) Click "Allow"
      (e) Click "OK"
      (f) Click "OK"

    5. Return to the LAO LAW home page and log in again in order to re-start the cookie-exchange process.

      (a) Set "Firefox will:" to "Use Custom settings for history"
      (b) Make sure "Accept cookies from sites" is not ticked
      (c) Click the "Exceptions" button

      (e) Click the "Allow for session" button
      (f) Click the "Close" button

  6. What type of cookies are used on this site?

    Duration of cookies - The cookies we use last only as long as a browser session. They are deleted when you close the browser or restart your computer. You may need to login again to create another cookie.

    Favourites/Bookmarks/History - If you get an error message when you link to a page from a Favourite or Bookmark or History item stored in your browser and you haven't logged in since you started your browser or computer you will need to login again to create another cookie.

    Destination of cookies - The cookie LAO LAW site uses is only sent to the server which originated it, i.e. to LAO LAW.
